A free PC VR mod for Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne.

Play as Max and Mona with tracked hands, physical weapons, manual reloading and bullet-time combat in VR. Please note this is a mod for a 20+ year old game... there will be bugs and jank. That said, I do plan on regular releases and bug fixes as needed.

Features

  • Full stereoscopic VR with head tracking, motion controls and roomscale movement.
  • Max and Mona support, with a visible body or optional hands-only view.
  • Independent aiming and dual wielding, physical jacket holsters and an optional shoulder holster for long guns.
  • Manual magazine, slide, pump and shell reloading, plus physical painkiller use.
  • Bullet time and shoot dodges, with smooth or snap turning.
  • Punches, gun melee, enemy disarming, and grabbing and throwing ragdolls.
  • Catch and throw back live grenades, or bat airborne guns and grenades with a weapon.
  • Physical rifle scopes with an optional eye-lock setting.
  • Wrist HUD, weapon ammo displays and a virtual screen for menus and cutscenes.
  • In-game VR settings for world scale, rendering resolution, grip modes, comfort vignette, HUD placement and more.

Melee

  • You must swing hard enough for enemies to react to melee hits.
  • Standard enemies take 5 hits to kill unarmed, 3 hits to kill if using a weapon.
  • A 3 hit unarmed combo (2 hits with a weapon) will stagger an enemy, at which point you can disarm them by grabbing their weapon.
  • You can also disarm an enemy while shoot dodging, throwing a weapon at them to stagger them, or if they are knocked over.

Holsters

  • Gun holsters are located on your lower chest on either side.
  • Ammo can be grabbed from either hip.
  • Painkillers can be grabbed from the mid upper chest, bring to your mouth to consume.
  • Grenades are located in shoulder holsters.
  • Check the VR options, there are more configurations as well as an optional shoulder holster for long guns.

Requirements

  • Your own installed copy of Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. The English Steam version is the tested release target; other builds are not verified.
  • A Windows 10/11 gaming PC with SteamVR installed.
  • A PC-connected VR headset and two tracked controllers. Development testing used PSVR2 and Quest 3 through PC VR. This is not a standalone Quest application.

PSVR2 adaptive triggers use the optional PSVR2 Toolkit, installed separately. Standard controller vibration does not require the toolkit.

Download and install

Download the mod ZIP from this repository's Releases page. The Code → Download ZIP button downloads the documentation, not the installer.

  1. Install the game, run it once, then close it.
  2. Extract the entire mod ZIP. Keep the setup-files folder beside Max Payne 2 VR Setup.exe.
  3. Run Max Payne 2 VR Setup.exe, select your game's maxpayne2.exe, and click Install / update. Wait for installation to finish; it can take a few minutes.
  4. Start SteamVR, launch Max Payne 2 from Steam, and select MP2VR_FirstPerson in the game's startup window.
  5. Ensure that D3D Hardware T&L is selected for Acceleration. Click Play

Open VR Settings from the main menu to customize the experience. See the installation guide and controller guide for details.

To update, run Setup from the new release. To remove the mod, run Setup and choose Uninstall. The installer preserves saves and user settings.
